real love - francis lung
Description: available to stream and download only on bandcamp -https://francislung.bandcamp.com/track/real-love late last year my wife cozza and I moved to the countryside of north-western france to be near her parents ahead of the birth of our first child (sasha, a little girl who arrived in december 2021). i vowed to turn the second bedroom into a makeshift recording studio (which i have named 'studio velour' after the velour sound absorption curtains we put in) from the minute we arrived, and as soon as i finished installing everything i started recording this, a cover of the beatles' posthumous classic 'real love'. initially made just to test drive the home studio, i realised this recording was an opportunity to fully produce a song completely alone - playing the instruments, engineering, mixing and even (kind of) mastering. i've never actually mixed anything i've recorded before, and so for better or worse i wanted to share it as a personal milestone - my first recording made in france, mixed and 'mastered' by me at 'studio velour' in glorious mid-fidelity xxx

but unbeknownst to me
that loneliness
it does miss me too happiness i’ve kissed you
a hundred times, maybe more maybe less
but i am married to this sadness your divorce just could not come too soon i lay here in a room with no breather holes i know you never really wanted this
you never wanted all of this ordinariness when i was your mistress
i pulled the sheets over your emptiness you made the mundane seem so serious and when i used to care less
i used you to excuse my drunkenness
you just made sober seem so tedious i cant believe that i will see you soon no i dont
i wont believe it until i see through
if you knew the things you made me do laying here in a room with no breather holes loneliness i miss you but unbeknownst to me that loneliness
it does miss me too

spotify - https://open.spotify.com/artist/5zQhRSqJxTbROSMJtGCXYN?si=l6QRcuwxR4eIAfTxTDAOCA it feels significant to be sharing this song about hangovers now that i'm nearly two months sober. it's the longest i've been without, and for someone who spent the past decade touring and working in hospitality jobs where alcohol is your reward, your commiseration and often your fuel, it leaves a big hole when it's gone.
though there is a sense of loss, what i've gained is perspective - i never again want to be in the state i was when i wrote this song. i worked 50 hour weeks in a bar, and i drank every night. it felt monumental to get to the end of a 12 hour shift and the booze made it seem euphoric. the mornings however, were anything but. i'd wake up super early from low blood sugar but i was too sick to eat. i'd have slept really badly, jumped in the shower and gone back to work without breakfast. some mornings i'd even have a little beer to get me through. by the evening, you've worked hard enough to deserve a pint - and so the cycle repeats. outwardly, i functioned pretty well but internally every day was a 'bad hair day', and even my good days were tainted. it's no fun to be constantly recovering. i'm learning how good it feels to be 100% every day.
if you're struggling, please know that you're not alone, there's a way out and it's worth it.
