Urangan Pier Sunset
Description: This short mid to late elementary piece is ideal for rote teaching or rote-first learning. Depicting a sunset from the same region as its sister piece, Urangan Pier Sunrise, the piece captures a gentle mood, inviting the student to focus on touch and phrasing. The simple and repetitive harmonic line supports the development of early pedal technique. Students enjoy playing this evocative piece! Purchase the sheet music at www.helenperris.bandcamp.com

Ms B Plays Mamma Mia
Description: We've been so busy this year at the studio, that there's a huge backlog of videos still to share with you. Here's Ms B from way back in November last year, playing Mamma Mia (yes, the ABBA song!) as arranged by Elissa Milne. This piece is very challenging, as it contains lots of detailed articulation (different ways of playing the notes) and is rhythmically challenging as well. We had lots of fun learning this piece and Ms B enjoyed playing it for her mum, too! Mamma Mia - Andersson and Ulvaeus (arr. Milne)

Reinterpreting and Recomposing in piano lessons with Mr L and Skeleton March
Description: Music is more than just what's on the page. It can be interpreted in different ways, transformed by using different moods, stories or characters. Here, Mr L plays Skeleton March by Daniel McFarlane (Supersonics Piano). We then explored how we could tell different stories using the same piece. Slowing it down, changing the articulation from staccato (short and detached) to legato (smooth and well connected), making the dynamics more subtle and adding pedal transformed Skeleton March into a mournful Funeral March. Using the top end of the piano and decorating the melody with turns and passing notes made our Skeleton March become a dance of Evil Pixies! Enabling students to make something new of their own using something familiar or established unlocks their creativity and gives them permission to explore! Mr L is a student of Helen Perris Music Studio.
